New MacBook Pro Picture 1

Having a portable video editing station is nothing new in the industry. But Apple's newest MacBook Pro took another step forward in making life easier on location. First of all at less than 1" thick and 6.6 pounds this is truly a lightweight machine. The graphics adapter has been improved and the glass enclosure certainly improves the durability of the display.

But it's the improved battery life that we think will be appreciated in the field. Since we are currently shooting on SxS cards that allow us to instantly capture our HD footage to our MacBook Pro laptops, having a battery that lasts 8 hours on a single charge is a big deal. A 1000 recharge lifespan, means that the degradation usually seen as you continue to recharge your laptops battery has been significantly reduced. All in all, we're sold on the new model.

The folks at RED have thrown the big video camera producers yet another curveball. They announced recently that they will be offering a complete 3K resolution camera for under $4000. The camera dubbed Scarlet will be a totally modular camera whose parts can be interchanged with most of the RED catalog. This includes the "brain"...they will offer a line of brains that range in resolution from 2K to 28K (The 28K brain measures 168x56mm). We are trying not to hit the refresh button at the RED site all day long.
